Naomi Peak is a great hike along a well-marked trail from the Tony Grove Lake area.  Tony Grove is a popular site seeing destination 28 miles NE of Logan Utah.  The summit has views in all direction and is highly recommended as a day hike or a SOTA adventure.

To get to the trailhead.  Take Hwy 89 east out of Logan and up Logan Canyon 21 miles.  Signs will direct you to turn left and drive the remaining 7 miles up a winding but well paved road to a parking lot at Tony Grove Lake.  During the summer there is a day use fee ($6 I believe) for parking here.  Pit toilets are available in the parking area.

Look for the trail heading out north from the end of the parking lot.  Signs will guide you the whole way including at the intersection.  Generally take the left hand forks as there are a couple of right hand turns heading the White Pine Lake.  The direction to Naomi peak is clearly marked.  The trail it relatively gradual and good the entire way.  Hiking poles are useful at times, but not 100% needed.  Near the summit you will pass through a few rock bands that require hands to climb up ~5ft steps.  Nothing to serious and the exposure is low.  The summit itself is a rock block with a ramp to the top on the east side.

You could setup your radio amongst a few trees below the rocky summit if desired.  I setup on the summit block with my SOTApole wedged between some rocks.  Propagation from this perch was amazing given the current (low) solar conditions.

Details:

  • 6.9 miles round trip
  • 2064 feet of climbing
  • Cell/Data coverage good on Verizon and ATT about half way up the peak to the top.  No coverage at Tony Grove parking.
  • APRS coverage good down low and up high.
