Diamond Craters HP, OR | June--2022

The trip report by K7ATN is good but there are no signs anymore. Check out the attached map from Google Earth for guidance. We were not sure what road to take but we eventually figured it out based on K7ATN's report.

I was at the Malheur Field Station, about 31 miles from the turnoff on Lava Beds Rd so I decided to activate this summit. All went well until I discovered that I left my radio at the Field Station.

The one steep area mentioned in the trip roport is quite steep for anything but a 4-wheel drive vehicle. I didn't make it up until I switch to 4WD.

Take St Regis Mt. exit head North at stop sign turn left in about 3 miles turn left onto FR road 282.  Stay on 282 for 20.5 miles at the top of the pass turn right onto FR road 391 in 5.5 miles you will come to the trail head 250. AWD vehicle would be able to make it.  From the trail head to the Peak is about 1.5 miles, if you feel ambitious you can continue back on trail 250 to activate Eagle Peak which is in Montana. Great Views!

After the North Cascades Highway opened, enjoyed taking a mid-week day to activate this summit near Winthrop, WA.  Spring is a great time as temperatures were in mid-60's, there was no snow, and some flowers were blooming.  Both WTA and AllTrails have great trail information, and links are provided below.  Trailhead is located about 15 minutes (7.8 miles) from main 4-way stop in Winthrop.  Boatlaunch & Trailhead parking is at the Northeast corner of Patterson Lake, and a Discover pass is required for parking at the boat launch.

Tolmie Peak

It took me 2 days to get my 4 contacts at Tolmie Peak. I drove an hour and a half from Buckley, WA down HI 162 to Mowich lake. I then hiked the 2.9 miles past Lake Euclid to Tolmie Peak and experienced strong winds and driving rain to get heard.

I bought my Rainier park pass on the way to Mowich lake and a Fee Stop, $20.

There is clean water at Lake Euclid and while the rain is falling so are the streams. there were 2 waterfalls along the trail.

Goat Mountain, OR

Goat Mtn is located southeast of Molalla. It is a radio comm site with numerous VHF antennas (+ other transmitters) on one tower at the summit. This site is home to the W7OTV Repeater (146.96 Tn=127.5 Hz) and is a Verizon cellsite.  The access roads are good and 2wd passable with some careful driving up to intersection with NF-45 and NF4510-021.  Then the road becomes “gnarly” and a high-clearance 4wd is best.
